In the PTE Academic Reading section, no question type possesses greater scoring power than Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks (R&W FIB).

Carrying up to 22 points towards Reading and 22 points towards Writing, this task appears at the very beginning of Part 2. Test-takers are presented with a 200 to 300-word passage containing four to five blanks, each featuring a dropdown menu with four word choices.

Students often rely on "reading by ear"—selecting whichever word "sounds right". Under exam pressure, this approach leads to erratic scores.

1. The Three-Filter Method for Dropdown Blanks

Before choosing a word, run the blank through three sequential linguistic filters:

THE 3-FILTER ELIMINATION METHOD

  • What grammatical slot is vacant?
  • Do you need an adjective modifying a noun? A transitive verb taking a direct object?
  • Or an adverb modifying a past participle?
  • Look immediately AFTER the blank. Is there a preposition ("to", "with", "in", "of")?
  • Certain verbs pair strictly with specific prepositions (e.g., "attribute to", "comply with").
  • Does the remaining word fit the academic register of the surrounding passage?

2. The Power of Dependent Prepositions

Pearson’s test writers regularly construct questions where the four multiple-choice options have nearly identical general meanings, but only one option grammatically pairs with the following preposition:

3. Pearson’s Academic Collocation List (ACL)

Pearson developed the Academic Collocation List (ACL)—a corpus of 2,469 lexical pairs that occur frequently in academic texts. The PTE algorithm draws heavily from this list when creating Fill in the Blanks distractors.

  • Adjective + Noun: "profound impact", "viable alternative", "stringent criteria", "empirical evidence", "arbitrary decision".
  • Verb + Noun: "pose a challenge", "undertake research", "warrant investigation", "exert pressure", "bridge the gap".
  • Adverb + Adjective: "inherently flawed", "widely acknowledged", "readily available", "mutually exclusive".

When you see a blank preceding "evidence", and the options are practical / empirical / sensible / realistic, a student who has studied the ACL immediately selects empirical without hesitation.

4. Reading Time Management Strategy

The PTE Reading section is timed as a single block (29 to 30 minutes for approximately 13 to 18 items). There is no individual countdown for each question.

Crucial Advice on Multiple Choice (Multiple Answers): This question type features negative marking (-1 point for every incorrect box you tick). Only select options you are 100% certain about. If you are sure of one answer and unsure of a second, pick only the one you know. A single correct choice earns you 1 mark; guessing an incorrect second choice cancels out your mark to 0.
